One can of regular, non-diet soda has roughly one quarter of the carbohydrate you need to consume each day -- all of it in convenient, easily utilized, corn syrup derived sucrose. That means that it's all going to hit your bloodstream at once, and your body then has to spend some time and energy saying hello to it, creating insulin to mop it up, and then stowing it away for use later. That's a lot of energy to put out all at once.

In comparison, one serving of brown rice -- no, it's just something I happen to have been lectured on the other day, I'm not going to advocate brown rice, tofu, and wheat grass -- has roughly half the amount of carbohydrate as that one soda, it's in the form of much more complex carbohydrate that take your body some time to break down, and so that rice is like time released energy for your body. The soda hits all at once, so it takes a lot of energy from you. The brown rice is released more slowly, so your body can handle it while doing other things.

And let's not get into the fact that a quick sugar shot starts out a yo-yo bounce where you pump out insulin, then your blood sugar drops, so you need to raise it back up, which might lead your pancreas to overreact, etc.

All of that, by the way, is assuming you're talking about a 12 ounce soda.

Once your blood sugar is raised, you just have to wait for your body to deal with it all. You could, I suppose, inject insulin, but that would be a Very Bad Idea unless you are diabetic. You could also exercise vigorously for an hour or so, which will also help.

That's my guess. Another guess, by the way, is that there may be some preservative or other chemical in there that you're sensitive to. For instance, although I do drink diet soda, I limit how much I drink, because the aspartame affects my mood so much. Negatively.

Hope that helps.
