male vs female therapist

Posted by smokeymadison on November 30, 2004, at 14:43:47

hey all,

i am looking for a new therapist b/c my old one moved his office and it is too far to drive. he was may first male therapist and the therapy really brought out my trust isses w/ males, understandable b/c i have been rejected time and again by my dad.

i called a highly recommended male therapist in my (small) town but he is booked for months. he recommended a woman who sounds like she would be a great therapist for me. she has a direct approach and sounds like she would hold me accountable. but i wanted a male therapist, not a woman. granted, therapy would be a lot easier with a woman b/c my abandonment issues aren't near as strong with women. what should i do? should i call the male therapist back and ask to be put on a "waiting list" sort of thing? is it fair to the female therapist he recommended that i go into therapy hoping to stop seeing her in a few months? advice /suggestions greatly appreciated!!!
