My therapist used to be really careful about normalizing our relationship, saying that he would feel the same about all his clients, etc. About a year ago I threw a tantrum and told him that if my relationship with him after nine years was the same as his relationship with someone he's seen for six months, then I had wasted eight and a half years in hard work of building a relationship. He agreed with me, and now he is quite open about the fact that our relationship *is* different in light of all the hard work we've both put into it.
