It sounds like transference to me.
I'm glad you're going to work on other ways of getting attention and caring. There *are* other ways, and they're actually better suited to gaining your goals.
I'm sure that others have mentioned this to you before, but you also might want to do a google search or Amazon search on Marsha Linehan. I found her theories very helpful. Don't let the title of the books fool you. The methods she teaches can be useful to anyone, not just one diagnosis.
