It hurts to see a friend go through such a horrible time. I don't know much about resources per se, just what I've tried to do personally. Mostly I listen. I'm not good at the cheering up stuff, and if someone has become so despairing that they've injured themselves, I can't imagine it's something they'd want to hear.

Listening is a great skill to cultivate, I have learned a lot. I remind them I'm here, and call or email them to do so. If they cry, I cry too (I'm easily triggered when I see people I love upset), and offer a hug if it feels like it would help.
I must sound like a simpleton, so naive. Things like helping with errands (like groceries) helps to relieve their stress too.
