My literal mind can't grasp this.

In the same session, my therapist told me (paraphrased as best I understand):

You can't help your feelings and shouldn't feel ashamed of them.

You are choosing to be upset about this and you can make a different choice.

It's been bugging me, because it seems that one can be true, or the other can be true. But both can't possibly be true.

Am I interpreting this too narrowly?
